Pentik's ceramics factory
Pentik’s ceramics factory in Posio, near the Arctic Circle, is the northernmost ceramics factory in the world, producing approximately 200,000 items annually. Over the years, the factory has undergone several expansions; today, it covers an area of 6,000 m² and has a kiln capacity of 40 m³. In 2020, the factory employed 40 ceramics professionals. Thanks to Pentik, the ceramics industry is one of the municipality of Posio’s key economic sectors, and the company is the largest private employer in this municipality of just under 3,000 inhabitants. We are committed to maintaining our ceramics expertise and continuing to manufacture ceramics in Finland for decades to come.

Over 50 years of Finnish ceramics
Pentik’s ceramics factory—the northernmost in the world—was inaugurated on October 4, 1974. All things that matter grow and improve over the course of fifty years: love, the joy of living, the longing for beauty, and craftsmanship. Yet, half a century also holds phases that intrude uninvited. At times, one has had to grip the clay with white-knuckled intensity, but that is all part of the process. These fifty years have taught us that clay can turn into gold, and dreams into reality.

The speech at the factory's opening ceremony noted that the ceramics factory—which Anu and Topi Pentikäinen had created "out of thin air" in Posio—demonstrated that modern large-scale production was possible in a small, remote municipality. Today, Pentik is the only major ceramics manufacturer in Finland and a significant employer in the municipality of Posio. The newly hired factory staff were trained during a ceramics course held from March 11 to October 4, 1974, with Anja and Peter Winquist from the Arabia factory invited to serve as instructors. Through this course, 30 residents of the small municipality of Posio received training as professional ceramicists and secured employment in their home municipality; nearly half of the participants continued working with ceramics until retirement.

With love, Posio
Ceramic tableware and candles are manufactured at the Posio factory. Over the decades, ceramic production methods have evolved and the most strenuous stages of the work have been automated, yet much is still done by hand. The products are created through the following stages.
Stories from the people behind the work

Responsibility at the heart of everything
Sustainability plays a central role in all our operations. At our ceramics factory, we strive to recycle and utilize raw materials as efficiently as possible. Unfired clay is reused, glazed ceramic items broken during production are repurposed into recycled art pieces, and waste heat generated during the firing process is harnessed to heat our own facilities. The electricity used at the factory is generated from 100% renewable energy sources.
